DON Naturals products are produced without adding chemical nitrite, instead they are crafted using fruit and yeast extracts. Nitrites do not occur in significant quantities in these ingredients; therefore by using them we are adding only a small amount of nitrite to our products during processing.

What have we changed to make it NATURAL?

All artificial ingredients have been removed and replaced with 100% natural, easier to understand ingredients. Below are the artificial ingredients you would commonly find in a typical sliced ham, and what we’ve replaced them with:

  • Artificial ingredients commonly used: ACIDITY REGULATORS (326, 262), EMULSIFIERS (450, 451, 508), MODIFIED TAPIOCA STARCH (1412), THICKENER (407a), ANTIOXIDANT (316), SODIUM NITRITE (250).
  • Natural ingredients used to replace the above in DON Naturals: POTATO FIBRE, YEAST EXTRACT, CITRUS EXTRACT, CULTURED DEXTROSE, DRIED VINEGAR.

The DON Naturals range is naturally low in nitrites making it better for you. DON has produced this range without adding chemical nitrites, instead we have used fruit and yeast extracts. Actually, there are nitrites and nitrates. These are typically used as a food additive in cured meats to help keep processed deli meats full of colour and flavour, and prevent the growth of bacteria.

Nitrates and nitrites occur naturally in plant foods as part of the nitrogen cycle between air, land and water environments. Most of our dietary exposure to nitrates and nitrites is through fruit and vegetables.

DON has produced this range without adding chemical nitrites, instead we have used fruit and yeast extracts which offer similar curing capabilities to provide the pink colour of the meat.

All of the other natural products in the Australian market are using natural celery or vegetable powders which still contain relatively high concentration of Nitrites.

The DON Naturals range have been crafted with the same passion and dedication to quality as all our DON products. We have developed the product to have the same taste as our regular range.

We source high quality pork from government and independently approved suppliers from Australia, EU, USA, and Canada. The specially formulated fruit and yeast extract comes from Spain, as currently not available in Australia.

There is not enough pork (pigs bred) in Australia to satisfy the demand of pork in the Australian domestic market. Therefore we also have to source high quality pork from overseas approved suppliers.
According to Australian Pork Australians already currently eat approximately 24.2 kg of pork per person annually. This consists of up to 9.2kg of fresh pork and 15kg of processed products (which includes bacon, ham and smallgoods).Australia produces approximately 360, 000 tonnes of pig meat every year.
